SKETCHBOOK: Senior Night at Valley

What a journey it’s been. My son, London, joined the Valley High School football team the summer before his Freshman year, excited but nervous. He liked football but had no idea what to expect when it came to actually playing the game.

FOOTBALL: Valley vs Breckenridge County

The Valley High School football Vikings had to ride an hour away from their home base of Viking Harbor to meet the Breckenridge County Tigers. It was a fruitful trip for the Vikings record as they came away with the blow out victory 42-0. Valley dominated with smothering defense and a supercharged offense. In fact, it was the supercharged offense they started the season with before an epidemic of injuries sidelined amazing players for weeks at a time. FOOTBALL: Western at Valley

The Valley High School Vikings took to the field at Viking Harbor last night to host fellow South End rival Western High School for a showdown. Was the game hard fought? You bet. Was it officiated fairly?¬†Of course not. Did the Vikings make mistakes? Unquestionably. Did the referees look the other way on visitor penalties? Are you kidding me? They always do. FOOTBALL: Valley at Fairdale

I’ve written this post over and over. Ten times, in all actuality. It’s hard to believe what happened last night in a high school football game and, since I’m planning to press charges, I have to make sure I don’t say the wrong thing. As usual, Valley played a fair game against the players from Fairdale and the referees. Nothing unusual there. In Jefferson County, the fix is in for the Vikings. We’re used to it. FOOTBALL: Valley at Anderson County

The Valley Vikings had to go on the road last night. Like on…the…road. The Vikings traveled an hour down I-64 to visit the Anderson County Bearcats on the Bearcats homecoming night. As usual, Valley’s kids played their guts out and stayed with Anderson County before ultimately falling 20-0. Continue reading “FOOTBALL: Valley at Anderson County”

FOOTBALL: Pleasure Ridge Park at Valley

When Valley plays Pleasure Ridge Park, it’s always a tough game for the Vikings and this year did not prove to be any differently as the boys in blue took the L 41-6. I’ve watched this rivalry for 4 years and it was populated by the same things we’ve come to expect. Continue reading “FOOTBALL: Pleasure Ridge Park at Valley”

FOOTBALL: Valley at Waggener

The Valley High School Vikings had another hard fought battle last night, this time against Waggener. It was even the WHAS11 Game of the Week. Too bad they didn’t broadcast the game because it was a 16-on-11 mauling where the 11 football players and 5 officials in Waggener’s favor dropped the hammer on the Vikings 34-13 in a non-conference game so luckily, the loss doesn’t affect their playoff standing. FOOTBALL: John Hardin at Valley. Bonus: Holy Cross at Valley JV

It’s been an interesting week for Valley High School Football. On Monday, the JV team finally got some action with Holy Cross visiting. The reason I say finally is that every year, there’s a junior varsity schedule but every year, other teams don’t have enough players to field a junior squad. FOOTBALL: Shawnee at Valley

No school today meant that football at Valley High School was a Thursday night affair and that’s why the Shawnee Golden Eagles spent time at Viking Harbor on the night before the traditional Friday Night Lights. Continue reading “FOOTBALL: Shawnee at Valley”
